Providing Education & Opportunities in ILS for Bermuda’s Future Business Leaders
Through lectures, mentorship, and hands-on experiences, students are introduced to the innovative ILS market and gain insights into cutting-edge solutions for natural catastrophe and specialty risks like cyber risk.

ILS Bermuda’s Education Initiative: Designed for Bermuda College Students
Since 2017, ILS Bermuda has partnered with the Bermuda College to provide Bermuda College students with access to ILS Bermuda's Convergence event, held in October each year. Over the last few years, this initiative has grown to become a more comprehensive offering, that seeks to provide Bermuda College students with a full-year programme, running parallel to students’ academic programmes. The programme seeks to be complimentary to students’ academic endeavours by offering both practical, real-world engagement with the insurance, reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) sectors and provides multiple networking opportunities designed to help students begin careers in these sectors.

Key Programme Elements:
-
Year-Round Mentorship
In addition to the mentors who are assigned to Bermuda College students attending the Convergence Conference, year-round mentorship is offered to help students in areas such as their career focus, internship choices as well as university selections. They also provide additional support with resumé development and supporting the interview practice process.
-
Attending Convergence
Students attend ILS Bermuda’s Convergence Conference, enjoying an opportunity to learn more about ILS and reinsurance by attending panel sessions, with support from industry mentors available for guidance and questions during the event. Students are also encouraged to participate in social events and network with conference attendees, mentors and ILS Bermuda committee members.
-
Resumé Building, LinkedIn & Social Media
Volunteers from the ILS sector provide a high-level overview of advice designed to enhance the impact of students’ resumes. Students work with their assigned mentors who provide guidance and feedback on the student resumés. This process is designed to support them in preparing for internship applications.
-
Interview Practice
This module provides a general overview of good practice for interviews, followed by an opportunity for students to practice through one-on-one mock interviews with industry practitioners. Students and interviewers are matched based on their industry interest, such as underwriting, accounting and actuarial.
-
Lunch & Learns
This module was developed based on feedback from Bermuda College students who wanted to learn more about various areas of the market. The sessions, which are organised by student volunteers, in conjunction with the ILS committee, cover important topics and questions, including “What do actuaries actually do?”, “What do brokers actually do?” and “How are insurance companies structured?”, helping to give students a broader understanding of the market.
-
Internships
Through internship partnerships between ILS Bermuda and local companies, students are encouraged to apply and interview for paid summer internships and work-shadow opportunities that are exclusively dedicated for Bermuda College students from this programme. Internships are offered by ILS and other insurance and reinsurance market participants where students can learn ‘hands on’ and gain valuable work experience.
Testimonials
record_voice_over “Bermuda College Programme completely changed my life. By participating in the programme, I was able to learn extensively about the reinsurance industry, network with professionals, and secure two summer internships. The experiences I gained were invaluable and culminated in me receiving two scholarships that have entirely funded the remainder of my university education overseas. I would highly recommend the ILS Bermuda College Programme to anyone that is considering joining.”
record_voice_over “This has been one of the most interactive, immersive, and challenging internships I've experienced. From the various homework assignments on topics like 'the protection gap' to listening in on actual calls about ILS transactions, this was a great learning experience for me."
record_voice_over "Having this internship while I was in school was very beneficial due to the classes I am currently enrolled in. I was able to take what I was learning in school and use that knowledge at the office. Everyone at the office has been incredibly helpful teaching me new things and has made my time with Integral ILS unforgettable."
